One thing I’ve learned after doing this for over 17 years is that there is relatively little difference in the vinification methods between $25 wines and $250 wines…sometimes you’re just paying for overhead.
 
So anytime we come across a co-op that has access to some insane vineyard sites, uses top flight barrels, and yet keeps prices reasonable - we’re gonna take a hard look. Some of the best wines in the world started as a Co-op. Ever heard of Clos Erasmus or L’Ermita? 👀

We tasted some of their lineup way back in February, and the Vinsobres and Vacqueyras were absolute show stoppers. I mean, the others were really good - but these two were really good.
 
We then found out we could get the Vacqueyras, by far the best of the group, to the US for 50% off the release price (see below)…and that is when things really started to get interesting.
 
These wines, much like the Florets Gigondas, represent everything I love about the wine business right now. When we started in this business, we simply did not have access to this quality of juice at these prices.

The Luce Estate in Montalcino I think may be one of the most beautiful places on earth. While I don't like to judge a book by its cover, typically operators that spend this much money in the vineyard and on their facilities churn out quality product.

So it should be no surprise that the flagship wine from this estate, Luce, rests easy in a world of 99 and 100 point scores and $135 price tags. That said, not all of their wine costs an arm and a leg, and the quality doesn't suffer.

Lucente is the second wine to Luce and is absurdly delicious at a very reasonable price. This is also only the second time we have been able to offer this wine for $19.99, so it is kinda one of those get while the gettin' is good situations You can read a bit more about the wine and see some photos of the estate here.

In a world where Prosecco prices seem to be going parabolic (even heavily distributed brands like La Marca now sell for north of $15.00 in some outlets), there is one brand that is starting to take the world by storm....and that brand is Corte Giovanni.

Though Prosecco is made throughout the northeastern Italian regions of Veneto and Friuli, the DOC of Treviso has time and time again proved itself to be the home of the worlds best Prosecco. Corte Giovanni has managed here a Prosecco that has more vibrancy and complexity to it than most (especially at this price). This very dry version of Prosecco (the meaning of Extra Brut) is as modern as it gets, but it reflects the growing awareness that Treviso is producing wines that aren’t simply the fun, frothy party wines that the larger areas of Prosecco make.

So if you're bringing a bottle to a party (these are party wines after all!) and want bubbles, having a party and want bubbles, want some bubbles for the Holidays, or just love bubbles in general - this is one to keep your eye on.

My favorite part about the wine is that it is delicious enough that I love drinking it on its own, but it is at a price where I also don't mind throwing in some orange juice to celebrate (you know, if necessary 😁).

Since 2021, Cape Charles Cabernet has busted every single sales record we ever had at our stores. Every month, month after month, this wine sits at the top of the heap - and for good reason! This is one of the best sub $25 wines you will find - no matter the region, grape variety, etc. It's one of the best.

A label developed with Baron Ziegler (he's kind of a big deal, you can read more about him here) to take advantage of the high end left over juice, the results have been unreal. The label itself was lent to the project by artist Peter Curling - he's also kind of a big deal and you can read more about him here.
 
We started with Kamen Moon Mountain juice which sold out in just a few weeks. We then doubled down with 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Leonetti in Washington State. After the Leonetti success we told Baron the next one had to be huge…and he delivered.
 
This 100% Cassata Vineyard Cabernet is the best wine he's released yet, and I'm not sure it is even close.
 
Where / what is the Cassata Vineyard?
 
Rancho Los Guilicos is the historical name for the Cassata family’s estate in prime Sonoma Valley territory. It’s part of the original Mexican land grant from the 1830s, administered by General Mariano Vallejo, and offered to settlers who would attempt to tame this wilderness.
 
Vallejo gave the grant to his sister-in-law who sold it in 1850 to William Hood; the local peak is named after him. It went through a few other hands before it was bought by Judge Carroll Cook, Superior Court Judge of San Francisco. This is when it becomes known as “Rancho El Nido” or “The Nest” and when Jack London and his love for the Valley of the Moon, as well as the Judge’s expertise with cocktails, enters the picture. London’s ranch was at the edge of the property; and Cook planted grapes to make wine.
 
There were only three owners through the 20th century. The Cassata family bought El Nido in 2002, and have since been dedicated to restoring its glory through bio-sustainable farming. They’ve even re-planted olive trees to make olive oil. They’ve focused the vineyard choices on the traditional areas and the grapes that belong there (like the Cabernet family) as well as grapes that have helped build its fame (like Zinfandel and Alicante Bouschet). This is the beating heart of historical Sonoma wine country!
 
As for prices - you’ll find Cassata Vineyard Cabernet anywhere from $53 to $105 per bottle. As far as I can tell, NEVER has this vineyard ever had wine in the 21st century that has been priced under $25.00.

Should it be our wine of the year? It may not be just because we decided it can't be Wine of the Year every year, can it?

Any time a wine takes off like this one has, before we even have a chance to tell you about it, usually means we have something special on our hands.

Chablis over the last few years has enjoyed the best of times and the worst of times, and sometimes at the same time. The 2022 vintage was badly damaged by frost, though the hail that hit much of Burgundy spared Chablis. Things were hot, but at least it wasn’t the drought of 2020. The result was a smaller crop than anyone had hoped, but what was there was super concentrated (this is a good thing!).

Some of the greatest Chardonnays in the world come from the fossil-rich, Kimmeridge hills of Chablis; from the famed names like Dauvissat and Raveneau and from recently discovered (for me very recently) producers like Robert Goulley. A top flight producer that is giving you all the old school flavor with a little bit of new world charm. 

We’re lucky to grab some. You should too.

So let's keep it short and sweet this Friday, am I right?

Where can you find a collectible Bordeaux sealed in solid wood cases (picture below), from a heralded vintage, that has Michel Rolland on as a consultant, scored 94 points from Vinous (I’ll get to that in a second), and is only $29.99?
 
This is the only one I have ever found.
 
What’s crazy about the 2016 Chateau Gazin Rocquencourt are the scores. Notoriously hard grader Antonio Galloni from Vinous gave this wine a 94 point score. From the same vintage and the left bank he gave the 2016 Les Carmes Haut-Brion ($220 per bottle and a 99 point Jeb Dunnuck wine) the exact same score. That is just a reference point for the quality level we are talking about here.
 
I also loved his write up:
 
"The 2016 Gazin Rocquencourt is gorgeous, radiant and incredibly inviting, just as it was en primeur. Blackberry jam, chocolate, cloves, spice and new leather are all fused together, but it is the wine’s textural depth and impeccable balance that makes it absolutely irresistible.  This is an especially overt, racy style. What a joyous wine this is.”
 
Like much of the best of Bordeaux, Chateau Gazin Rocquencourt has proven itself over centuries. The elegant mansion was built in 1660 but the estate’s origins go back to the Middle Ages, and it can reasonably be called one of the oldest wine estates in the great commune of Léognan, the beating heart of Graves. Like its name suggests, the region’s crucial vineyards are full of gravel, as with Gazin Rocquencourt’s hilltop site, and the estate benefits even more by sharing the winemaking team of Malartic-Lagravière (my new fave wine).
 
This is only the 3rd time I have ever seen this wine at this price in the US, and current vintages of Gazin Rocquencourt now start in the $60s (here).
 
You always hear Bordeaux collectors talking about “I used to pay $30 for that back in the day”.
 
Well, now we can too 😂 - I actually already took a case home and busted into it 👀 (pic below).

The last two years we have put Escorlada on sale to usher in the first weekend in December, so we thought...why not do it again?!?!?!?!

I love everything about Escorlada. I love the wine, I love the packaging, I love the box it comes in, I love the whole thing.

When it is on sale like this? Find me another wine that tastes this good, looks this good, and impresses like this, for $14.99. I'm not sure it exists.



The wine has been rated among the top 1% of all wines in the world by Vivino, was our 2019 Wine of the Year and is an all around ridiculous value at $14.99 per bottle.

What's the background?

Bodegas Lo Nuevo is crucial to the modern success of Spanish wine, especially wines from the Levante, the Africa-facing south. Here the Almansa region grows Garnacha, among other traditional Spanish red grapes, but unlike the oxidized, alcoholic wines of yore, the new wines are bright and sunny with all the original fruits from the grape preserved. Lo Nuevo has few peers in this grand evolution from the ancient and occasionally noble to something populist, fruity and modern. But they would be the first to insist that their success is conditioned upon old vines grown at high altitudes. Here the Garnacha is at nearly 3500 feet, where the otherwise relentlessly warm temperatures see nighttime cooling into the 40s.

These old Garnacha vines produce BIG and RICH red wines that don't require the same price points as some of the California peers because, quite frankly, the costs to make them in Almansa are simply not as big as they are in Napa.

So here we go, for five days only, maybe my favorite wine in the store for what is an absolutely silly price.

We’ve got a doozie for you today.
 
A new project planted only in 2004, Pontey Lamartine has a prestigious set of neighbors, particularly Château de Léognan and the truly legendary Domaine de Chevalier (one of my all time faves). It might be new, but this portion of Bordeaux has been producing wine since at least the 14th century; owner Dominique Haverlan built upon the successes of the Gaubert family, who’ve been selling wine since 1796. Haverlan, with a long winegrowing history in Bordeaux, bought the Vieux Château Gaubert in 1988, restoring the house and the vineyard. Today Romain Haverlan handles the winemaking. 50% Merlot, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon (although they also claim 8% Petite Verdot 🤷), with one year in French Oak, one-quarter of that new.
 
We tasted this wine for the first time earlier this year and absolutely loved it, and we decided to mention it in this newsletter after I watched two customers buy straight cases of it over the weekend after just tasting it on the machine. It also doesn’t hurt that we have the lowest price in the US on this wine by $15 per bottle 😁. I also am not sure I can say anything that has not already been said about the 2018 vintage in Bordeaux.
 
Flying overseas to find wines like this has really transformed some of our offerings as of late. We’ve opined many times recently that the quality level of our $25-$75 collectible offerings has never been higher, and the value we currently have in store between $25 and $60 I would put up against anyone in the US right now. We used to be at the mercy of our distributors and importers, all of which offer a relatively limited selection of wines compared to what is available globally. Being able to find something like Pontey Lamartine Pessac, and be able to offer it for $24.99 per bottle, just gets me really excited.

All I can tell you is that if you don't know White & Sea...you need to.

The wine has been at or near the top of our white wine sales for nearly six years running, and it shows no signs of slowing down.

The winery actually told us this is one of the hottest white wines in the UK right now, with many stores like the ones here, and here, selling the wine for between £11 and £12 which equates to around $14 to $15 per bottle.

We found this gem at the world's largest wine trade show, ProWein, where so many of the world’s winemakers collect each spring in Germany. At Prowein we tasted and tasted and tasted (someone has to do it). We did all that tasting because you wanted us to find something so tasty, so refreshingly crisp (but still weighty enough to matter) and, dare we say it, a freaking value that it practically crawled into our luggage and said take me home.

White and Sea fit that mold for us - and I think you all seem to agree with our assessment. I believe the reason is the level of value this wine brings at $7.99 per bottle is unparalleled. 

What makes it so good?

It’s surprising that grapes like Sauvignon Blanc aren’t more widely planted in southern France, as they can be harvested fairly early to retain bright and citrusy acidity without really losing character or even complexity. So here they do only night harvests, and they keep fermentations at low temperatures, emphasizing the tropical side of the grape.

The wine also handles consumption at high velocity quite well, which makes it perfect for Thanksgiving with the family!! 😂

Gascony ain't just the Three Muskateers, though they have a place in our hearts as well. More than anything, Gascony is foie gras, delicious plums and apricots, rich dinners with Armagnac to follow. But the white grapes grown here are not just for great brandy, they have always been consumed as wine too and the last decade or so has seen an embrace of clean, cold winemaking to preserve the aromas of otherwise neutral grapes like Ugni Blanc or Folle Blanche. It's also seen new plantings of Sauvignon Blanc, a grape that requires no heroic measures to reveal its aromatic riches. Whats fun here is that these same winemaking methods generate something bright and vibrant but without much resemblance to other such Sauvignon Blancs (I'm looking at you, New Zealand), many of which have begun to seem like self-caricature. Vinsobres is a red wine only appellation that sees a more diverse set of soils than most of the other Rhone AOCs. This 100% Cabernet is full of dark berry flavors to offset its tough guy tannins. This is BIG wine for little money. It’s basically the wine equivalent to Patrick Swayze in “Roadhouse.” Best movie EVER.

Aside from sounding like Dustin Hoffman’s character in Midnight Cowboy, Rasteau is one of the genuine values in red wine. More or less baby Chateauneuf, Rasteau these days mimics the blend that has evolved in Chateauneuf-du-Pape and now extends to other critical areas of the Southern Rhone: 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 5% other (in this case, Cinsault). It reflects a perceived truism of wine: if you want to create complexity in warm climates, you need additional grapes. It helps that these vines are between 30 and 50 years old, facing a most helpful southeast towards the famed Dentelles de Montmirail (the “teeth of Montmirail”, don’t you know), so they pick up all the morning sun and avoid the harsh sunlight of the late afternoon.

2018 Le Comte de Malartic

Napa winemaking icon Jayson Pahlmeyer had a quote about second label wines (specifically about the Jayson red blend that was his $50 second label to the $150 Pahlmeyer Prop Red) that I love. He said "“The Jayson goes into the same brand new French oak barrels [as the main label, Pahlmeyer], has the same barrel-aging regimen, same blending, same care and dedication from my winemaker,” Pahlmeyer explains. “It’s 90 percent of the quality at 50 percent of the price.”
 
90% of the quality at 50% of the price is a standard I can get behind.
 
I told you last week that one of the best wines I tasted in 2023 was the 2018 Chateau Malartic La Graviere, but at $59.99 that is not in my weekly wine budget.

Enter the 2018 Le Comte de Malartic, the second label from this famed estate.
 
In 2018 for this wine, we’re talking about almost the exact same grape blend, same vat period, same vilification methods, and really the only difference being yields (the Comte is from some of the younger vines on the Estate that have higher yields), and aging time - the Comte sees 15 months vs 18 months for the big boy.
 
After tasting the wine I think Jayson Pahlmeyer is pretty spot on.

Is it as good as the flagship wine? It is not.
 
But at $24.99 vs. $59.99 it suddenly becomes probably one of the 5 best sub $25 wines we carry in the entire store. I had a bottle two Sundays ago with some Cheeseburgers and it was divine. Honestly, the fact that it is below $25 makes me love it even more.

It reminds me a bit of a wine called Mas Doix Salanques from Priorat. Not in that they taste the same, but Salanques was a second label to the $100 Mas Doix, and at $29.99 it was not only delicious, I have bottles that are now 20 years old and still taste fresh and young. As a collector and wine lover, finding $25 wines that can go the distance is part of the fun!
 
No other bottles of this vintage are currently for sale in the United States. Wine.com does have the 2019 vintage available for $34.99 per bottle.
 
A great wine for your cellar / wine fridge, for this weekend, for Holiday gifts, or maybe your Thanksgiving table (that all depends on how much your relatives drink 😂).

All that said, I know what I'm drinking tonight!

2018 Expression de Chateau Grand Bourdieu Rouge

On a buying trip back in February we uncovered a lot of great value gems, but the wine we are presenting to you today, to me, was the best value wine we tasted the entire trip (and honestly one of the best wines all around).

It's been awhile since I've found something under $15.00 that checks several boxes for me:
1) Is really a food wine, but also can drink well by itself (I tested this last night!)
2) Is pleasant and complex with acidity that can excite multiple different flavor preferences (people that love light bodied wine and full bodied wine could be united here!)
3) Great packaging and a great deal

Sadly they would not let us buy it all, they only let us buy 250 cases. Which while it sounds like a lot, for a wine this good I even wonder if it will make it until Dec 31st. Here's to hoping!

So what is the background here?

There are around 10,000 wine brands in Bordeaux; you’ve probably not heard of most of them. In 2018, a lot of them made big, juicy wines, thanks to warmer weather, and garnered exciting scores. But a goodly number of those wines were just big and lacked complexity; the top sites were riper than most winemakers there are accustomed to handling. The so-called lesser sites were riper than they’re used to as well, but not so crazy ripe. Grand Bourdieu is planted on a mix of clay and gravel, like this part of Graves enjoys, that can handle the wet May-June-July but without holding too much water. They’ve been making wine since the 17th century and these days it’s heavy on the Merlot (70%), backed up with Cabernet Sauvignon (30%).

So if you're thinking about Holiday table wines, changing up your weeknight wines, looking for new tasty treats or just love great bottles...your ship has come in.

I continue to opine that our lineup of value right now in the store is the best that it has ever been - and the 2018 Grand Bourdieu is leading the charge!
